How to get to Palmela and Setúbal
A free shuttle bus will be provided from Train Station Oriente and the airport of Lisbon to Setúbal and to the Castle of Palmela on Sunday, September 14, 2014. A shuttle bus will also be provided from the Castle of Palmela to Lisbon on Thursday, September 18 and on Friday, September 19.
There will also be a shuttle bus between Setúbal and the Castle of Palmela during the week. The time table of the shuttle service can be find here.
Directions:
By train: There are two options:
1) Fertagus: These trains depart from the station Roma/Areeiro, in Lisbon and take 53 minutes to get to the Palmela train station. Setúbal is the next stop, 5 minutes away. There is a train every hour, being the first at 6:43 and the last at 23:43 (always at 43 minutes after the hour, on weekends). The fare is about 5 Euro.
To get to Roma/Areeiro from the airport
a) By Metro: First take the Red line until Alameda and then change to the Green Line towards Telheiras
and get out in Areeiro, then walk to the Roma/Areeiro Fertagus train station.
b) By Bus: Take the Carris 705 Bus line from the Airport to the Roma/Areeiro train station.
2) CP (Comboios de Portugal): These trains depart from Lisboa/Oriente the main train station in Lisbon. This station is just three stops by Metro, from the airport, but the trains are more expensive than the ones from Fertagus, and you’ll have to change in Pinhal Novo for a train to Palmela and Setúbal. The fare is about 10 Euro.
By Bus: You can get a Bus from Lisboa/Oriente to Palmela with TST (Transportes Sul do Tejo), route 565. There is a bus every two hours, starting at 8:30 and ending at 20:30. The fare is less than 5 Euro. To Setúbal you can get routes 562. There is a bus every hour, starting at 7:30 and ending at 19:00.
By Car: If you prefer to travel by car, from the airport you are just 30 minutes away and the drive is very easy, mostly highway right into Palmela and Setúbal. It is very difficult to miss Palmela, when coming from Lisbon from the Vasco da Gama Bridge, just look straight ahead and find a hill with a castle on top of it. Then follow the indications on the road.
Taxi: You can also take a taxi from the Airport to the city center or to a train station. Check if they have a taximeter. The taxi ride usually costs around 10 Euro to Roma/Areeiro. Travellers are advised to enquire about the fare before boarding the taxis.
